Film Screening & Directors Talk: Grown in Detroit

A screening of the film “Grown in Detroit” will take place at 10 AM on Wednesday, April 4 at the U-M Detroit Center‘s Ann Arbor Room. Mascha and Manfred Poppenk, the creators of this award-winning documentary, will present the film.  This event is hosted by the Penny Stamps Lecture Series and the Detroit Center.

“Grown in Detroit” tells the story of the Catherine Ferguson Academy in Detroit, one of only three schools in the United States which educates pregnant teens and young mothers about the importance of nutrition and helps them develop skills to be independent and support their families. Though students initially dislike the agricultural work included in the charter school’s curriculum, their attitudes change when crops begin to bear fruit and they see their hard work has transformed into profitable food sales.

The film is also about creating social, economic and environmental change. In a once thriving city, residents now struggle to find fresh produce. This school is one of several urban agriculture plots in Detroit that yields fresh produce to city residents.

“Grown in Detroit” has won dozens of awards since its debut in 2010. More information about the film including the trailer can be found at the documentary’s website: http://www.grownindetroitmovie.com

Joanne Leonard’s Newspaper Diary

Newspaper Diary: Trompe l’oeil Photographs

Open April 5 - May 31, 2012
U-M Institute for the Humanities Gallery, 202 S. Thayer, room 1010, Ann Arbor
Gallery Hours: 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM

Joanne Leonard’s work has always managed to exist in two alternate universes, one intimate, and another vast.  Both manage to be deeply relevant to the collective shifts of society.

These new works are what the artist describes as momentary collages, contrasting the historical weight and relative durability of books with the fleeting news images she’s carefully propped up on the book’s open pages. These thoughtfully orchestrated assemblages exist only in real time… performative, here and gone once the books are closed and the clippings put away.  Yet, the photographs serve as record to preserve them despite their inherent impermanence.

As a final layer, these large scale trompe-l’oeill prints become objects for the viewer, the datelines and newspaper clippings readable, suggestive of an oversized diary or journal, marking the comings and goings and accumulations over time.

Quintessence: Visualizing a Torodial Universe

Installation by Danielle Battaglia, with sound design by Robert Alexander. Duderstadt Center 3D Lab, April 13: 6 - 9 pm.

“I want to know God’s thoughts…the rest are details.”  - Albert Einstein

When I strip this project down to the essential motivation, I find that I too wish to discover the great order of all things. This project is an attempt to do just that by visualizing and better understanding the ethereal world that is all around us.  Using scientific facts and theories as a base I have explored abstract concepts and theories of cosmology and synthesized this information into my own theory and vision of the universe. I have been studying the theories and research of Plato, Stephen Hawking, Einstein and others on subjects such as black holes, white holes, wormholes, sacred geometry, Klein surfaces, physics, higher dimensions and space-time. Based on all this research I have come up with a form that I feel could be the basic design of our universe: a torus. The singularity point of the wormhole in the torus would be the big bang. I have taken these parameters and 3d modeled them to further explore how this universe will look as it grows and expands, what happens to the matter and energy within it and the possibilities of this universe budding into a multiverse.  To further visually grasp this concept I have installed this 3D model in the MIDEN, a 3D virtual space where one can experience the model on a new level, by moving through the space in 3 dimensions. Ultimately this project challenges the status quo by attempting to prove that there is more order and meaning to the universe then previously thought, while dually inciting a sense of beauty and wonderment. I believe that looking at scientific problems and theories through the lens of an artist or designer can illuminate new trends, patterns or insight that could not be fleshed out otherwise. But most importantly, I hope spiritually and aesthetically people come away with more insight and inspiration into how and why we exist, which is what I discovered I am truly searching for.

Between the Layers: An Exploration of Color and Texture

An offsite exhibition of paintings by Erica Wagner.

Color, texture, and luminosity are the key elements of my work. This series of paintings explore these qualities and allow me to also create my own process and passion for oil paint as a medium. I find it fascinating the way in which viewers try to make logistical sense of these abstract paintings. Life experiences are what influence our ways of seeing and in turn are what create perceptions. The ambiguity allows this series to grab hold of evolution and change depending on the viewer, which to me is beautiful.

Little Bang Theory
performing in Joshua White and Gary Panter’s Light Show
Free Admission

Frank Pahl (MFA 1998) performs with Little Bang Theory at MOCAD on Saturday, April 21 at 2PM

Frank Pahl’s Little Bang Theory create their own whimsical compositions and perform covers of soundtrack music on a panoply of toy instruments. Their arrangements come across like a hybrid form of chamber music, stunning in their beauty and childish complexity. Frank Pahl is a Kresge Fellow, modern composer and creator of automatic instruments. Pahl’s bands Only a Mother and The Scavenger Quartet, as well as his solo compositions have garnered critical acclaim both regionally and abroad. This fun and innovative ensemble will be creating a soundtrack for Joshua White and Gary Panter’s Light Show for one very special afternoon only.

Scott Hocking

Scott Hocking

Stamps Series at UICA

This special event will take place on Wednesday, April 25th at 7:00pm at the UICA Theater (2 West Fulton, Grand Rapids).

Scott Hocking was born in Redford Township, Michigan in 1975, and has lived and worked in Detroit proper since 1996. He creates site-specific sculptural and photographic installation projects, often using found materials. He is left-handed and wears contact lenses. He has a speech impediment and was once hypnotized in an effort to correct this. He is a Pisces, born on the 'day of creative isolation' in the 'week of the loner' and the 'year of the cat.' A psychic once told him he would have an “average life” and die at 88. He does not know how to roller-skate, ice skate, ski, or drive a stick shift. He is a talented percussionist and can play the glockenspiel part in 'Jupiter' from Holst's Planets suite. He can read palms. At 18, he applied for a bartender position at a strip club, but forgot the ingredients of a martini during his interview because of all the naked chicks. At 19, he lived in a Toyota Corolla for 4 months. At 27, he lived in a French chateau for 2 months. He has 3 tattoos. He is a 6 of spades. He has been to 41 of the 50 states. He once hiked the Death Valley dunes on a 117-degree day, which led to a police search and a lesson from the sheriff, who said: “Son, people die in the desert.” He was stalked by a New Mexican mountain lion. He once slept on a Toronto billboard. He has eaten reindeer in Akureyri, deep-fried honeybees in Shanghai, and eggnog in Ciudad Juarez. His spirit animals are the dog, which walks on his left, and the crow, which flies on his right. His childhood nickname was Scooter. He may have the blood of Spanish soldiers. Two dogs have bitten him in his life: Once on the right calf, and once above the right eye; nonetheless, he loves animals, and grew up with a mutt named Bubba who occasionally slept on the kitchen table. His favorite films are Le Samourai and The Road Warrior. He has been arrested 6 times, and accumulated more traffic tickets than anyone you know. His artwork has been exhibited nationally at the Detroit Institute of Arts, Cranbrook Art Museum, the University of Michigan, the Smart Museum of Art, and Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, and internationally at the Kunst-Werke Institute, the Van Abbemuseum, and at the Kunsthalle Wien. He recently completed projects at Sculpture Space in New York and the Bundanon Trust of Australia, exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts Museum in Philadelphia, and was awarded a Kresge Artist Fellowship. He is represented by the Susanne Hilberry Gallery.

Unless otherwise noted, all lectures will take place at 5:10 pm at the Michigan Theater in downtown Ann Arbor.
