An Evening With Roando Estevez

Dec. 12th Reception for Artist Rolando Estevez

An Evening With Roando Estevez
Presented by WSG Gallery Wednesday, December 12, 2012
Reception, 6:30-8:30 pm

In a lovingly restored colonial house in the Plaza de la Vigía, the books are manufactured by hand by a group of dedicated artisans. They produce 200 copies of each Vigía volume. The publishing house overlooks the San Juan River, and its breezes are always flowing in and out through the big shutters. There is an outdoor courtyard where book presentations are held in the evening under the stars. Rolando Estévez has been the artistic director of Ediciones Vigía since its founding. Year after year, he conceives of books that are spectacular in their design, and lush in their use of color, hand-drawn illustrations, and natural elements like sand, twigs, and seashells. He works together with Laura Ruiz, the editor of Ediciones Vigía, and Agustina Ponce, the director of Ediciones Vigía, as well as twelve workshop artisans, to keep publishing a wide range of works both by Cuban and international writers. His books are collected privately and in cultural institutions in Europe and the US, such as the British National Library, the Atlantic Art Museum, the New York Museum of Modern Art (MOMA), the U.S. Library of Congress, as well as numerous universities in the U.S., Canada and other countries in the Americas. The University of Michigan, Special Collections Library, holds a major collection of these extraordinary books.
