$20,000 Microsoft Firenze BXT 2010: The Student Innovation Competition

A&D STUDENTS NEEDED!

BXT represents Business, eXperience (Art and Design) and Technology – Firenze BXT is a confluence of innovation from these three disciplines for solving some real-life Microsoft problems. It is an annual innovation competition which has multidisciplinary student teams from the Engineering, Business and Design schools from selected top universities to focus on a specific problem area and come up with innovation ideas. The selected problem areas will be of significant strategic value and of a current focus to Microsoft and will be backed by Microsoft groups in the consumer space. This ensures that the student teams get the support they need from Microsoft while they work across their disciplines and come up with some great ideas! This year Microsoft selected Michigan, Carnegie Mellon, , Cornell, New York University and University of Washington to participate in this competition. The deliverables will be specific and encompass business/engineering/design elements.
All participants will be invited to Microsoft Innovation workshops in their universities. The finalists per university will get access to coaches and top business leaders at Microsoft the overall winning team will be eligible for a prize award of US $20,000. All teams will be given feedback on their work from leaders from Microsoft in all 3 disciplines of Business, Design and Technology.

U-M Student Prizes and Fellowship at Matthaei Botanical Gardens and Nichols Arboretum

Cash prizes and awards are made each year to encourage and recognize creative work and scholarship related to the mission of the UM Matthaei Botanical Gardens and Nichols Arboretum. Only undergraduate and graduate students enrolled at the University of Michigan are eligible.
Each Prize and Fellowship has its own criteria.

• For the Nanette R. LaCross and William D. Drake Prizes, a one paragraph nomination is welcomed by fellow students, staff or faculty members, and the nominee should be prepared to submit an application on short notice.
• For the Chase Fellowship, a clear indication of faculty mentor(s) is needed. Students (not faculty mentors) should apply directly.
• All applications/nominations are due by 5:00 pm Friday, January 15, 2010.

Fibers student to burn multiple silkscreens

I am an independent designer looking for a student to burn multiple silkscreens for me.  Screens and designs will vary in size.  All files are created in Adobe Illustrator, just need designs photocopied and burned onto screens.  I will provide/pay for all materials including photocopy services, screens, and photo emulsion.  Would need first batch of screens to be completed by mid-December.  Pay is negotiable.

Call for Apparel Designs

UM Business student Seth Samuels is developing an apparel line featuring unique, creative takes on the university through innovative design cues.  The goal is to create a line of apparel that accurately and creatively represents the university on a more fashion-forward canvas, complements of the student body.

We are looking for students who can accomplish the following - Designs that evoke the memories, images, and emotions that resonate here at the university, from marching with the band to simply chanting “The Victors.” Being that we all have a unique perspective on what the school looks like to us, the possibilities aren’t too limited.

Just as a brief background, our inspiration has come from Louis Elbel, the composer of “The Victors” in 1898 when Michigan defeated the Chicago Maroons.

The deadline for these initial submissions (initial because we would like to get off the ground with a few-rollout designs, but we’ll be welcome to more in the future), is January 3rd, 2010.

Specific compensation has yet to be determined as product numbers and sales projections have yet to be determined. However, being in startup mode, developing a team, as well as a % commission can be part this compensation.

Pnock Out Pneumonia Event Planner

- Previous experience with student groups preferred
- Experience organizing events preferred
- A strong track record of being responsive and reliable

Terms of Employment
- December through April
- Approximately 10 hours a week

Illustrator Wanted

Shawn Murphy is looking for an illustrator for a (set of) children’s book(s).  Specifically, someone with the ability to recreate cartoon versions of the characters on a developing show.  The character images can be viewed on the ThinknCap Website.  They can also be viewed in video format on iTunes by downloading the free podcast found by searching the key words: Benny’s Kitchen.  Please send a resume and 3 to 5 samples of your work (or a link to your URL) to .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) no later than January 1, 2010.

Compensation will range between $50-$100 a spread (8x16 drawings), averaging 8-10 spreads for the first book.  More could come on future books depending on the success of publishing.

Cartoonist/Illustrator Needed

Mike Winstanley is looking for a cartoonist/illustrator to collaborate with on a business book he is submitting for publication. When published, the book will be approximately 250 in pages in length and will have one (1) drawing per page.

Requirements:

* The illustrations will be used to illustrate different one-line phrases about good business practices.
* The main character is tentatively named “Jesse” and represents an “average businessperson”. Jesse is unisex and must be iconic enough to be easily recognizable to the readers. Most of the panels will have Jesse in a variety of simple situations. Jesse must be able to convey emotion. Other characters and simple objects will occasionally be used in the panels depending on the message being communicated by the phrase.
* The drawing style needed is simple black-and-white figures. Stick figures or figures with very simple features and bodies are the idea here.

Please submit one drawing of “Jesse” that captures the essence of the following phrase: “Being a good boss means seeing the diamonds in the rough”. It is meant to convey the idea that everybody has strengths - even the “worst” employees.

The winning submission will be determined by not only the drawing but by the artist’s interpretation of the phrase. Think about communicating a powerful message. But at the same time, think simple.
This drawing will be included with the book proposal being submitted to publishers. When accepted for publication, the 250 drawings will need to be completed by the deadline set by the publisher (TBD).

Compensation to be negotiated on a percentage of the profits from book sales and merchandising with the artist.

Lyric Opera of Chicago is currently recruiting for interns in the Annual Giving, Women’s Board, and Education departments. Interns may work full-time (35 hours/wk) or part-time (10+ hours/week).
