To foster the creative conversations that are at the heart of design and art making we have created studio spaces — one on North Main St. for all full time faculty and one on South State St. for our graduate students.
These spacious studios offer individual workspaces for our artists/designers, augmented by a multi-purpose shop, digital media equipment, and a central production/meeting area. These facilities are second to none in the U.S. The School of Art & Design faculty studios are situated in a newly renovated 14,000 sq.ft. factory space along Ann Arbor's expanding North Main Street corridor. Approximately one mile from the Art & Architecture building, the site is close to city services and Central campus, yet also directly adjacent to the Huron River and a metro park.
Studios provide an average of 300 sq. ft. of space for each tenure and tenure-track faculty member at the School, as well as visiting artists. Most studios feature operable windows, ample natural light, and high ceilings for large-scale work. An expansive centrally located common space on the first floor provides additional opportunities for collaboration, informal exhibition, and socializing. The facility also includes a communal tool shop, a kitchen and a freight door to facilitate transporting work.

A&D graduate studio facilities were designed to accommodate all of the School's graduate students in one 10,000 sq.ft. remodeled warehouse building. Located off campus at 1631 South State Street in Ann Arbor, the building features 30 spacious, private studio spaces as well as large shared working and meeting spaces, a multi-purpose workshop and digital video editing equipment.
Locating all the graduate students in a single integrated facility is the catalyst for community development among students, allowing them to share their creative work experiences and have opportunities to collaborate.
Parking is available on the South side of the Graduate Studios. The lot can be reached by entering through the Salvation Army entrance on Industrial, then driving around the rear of the Graduate Studios.
