BFA in Interarts Performance

Whether it results in a video, a cabaret piece, a public intervention, or a monologue — performance work has become a vital part of A&D’s curriculum. Students who want to draw from the broadest range of performance-based skills and traditions including acting, installation, play writing, costume design, set design and animation, now have a new degree option. A&D, in collaboration with the Department of Theater and Drama, is offering a BFA degree program entitled Interarts Performance, the first of its kind in the country among major universities.

The program, which is accepting applications for 2009 admission, is led by performance artist and A&D associate professor, Holly Hughes, and director/actor/performance artist Malcolm Tulip, U-M assistant professor of theatre and drama.

“It is for people interested in creating performance pieces,” explains program Co-director Holly Hughes, “but it’s also for those interested in costume design, site specific public art pieces, social activism, and comedy. Students will work closely with faculty to develop the individual programs that address their goals.”

The four-year Interarts Performance degree will balance required and elective courses from the School of Art & Design and the Department of Theatre and Drama. Students will also complete courses from colleges and departments across the University. A significant international experience is highly encouraged.

“The less compartmentalized and more multi-disciplinary way of working that is a hallmark of this new degree program is, in fact, the way the professional world operates,” confirms program Co-director Malcolm Tulip. “It offers students an important introduction to real world practices.”
