Once Upon a Time: Grimmly Inspired Call for Art

This year, the Edsel & Eleanor Ford House is celebrating the 200th anniversary of the first publication by the Brothers Grimm in 1812. From the over 200 stories published by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, the following nine stories have been selected to serve as inspiration for a juried exhibition beginning in July and closing November 2012:

The Frog Prince
Little Red Riding Hood
Puss in Boots
Goose Girl
Hansel & Gretel
The Spindle, the Shuttle, the Needle
Mother Hulda
White Snake
Hans My Hedgehog

Artists are required to draw their inspiration for the piece they are submitting from a Grimm Brothers’ version of the fairy tale, not from a popular movie or publication version. Look for unusual twists in the Grimm Brothers’ versions. For example, the poison apple in the story of Snow White is well known, but less known are the Queen’s previous assassination attempts including a poison hair comb.

Call for Art, Billboard

The Billboard Art Project is taking over roadside digital LED billboards to turn them into free public art venues for 24 hours or more.

Those in-your-face and colorful canvases that you see as you sit stuck in traffic are turned over to local and international artists for a little break from everyday advertising, presenting larger-than-life art in glowing colors.

Catch a glimpse from your car as you drive by, or hang out for awhile and watch the show with other artists and onlookers.

You won’t know what is coming next as different artists explore this medium, with the electronic canvas morphing every 6-10 seconds.

Call for Art, Work Detroit

In recent years, America, as a place, a culture, a concept, has increasingly become the material of artists. We see artists repurposing all things American —corporate brands and logos, music and fashion, flags, Presidents, taxidermied deer and bald eagles, American Indian motifs, and political advertisement references.

This show will include works that address this broad concept from varying perspectives and agendas. Seeking work from local and national artists in all media that addresses America’s obsession with itself.  This exhibition will be at the Work•Detroit Gallery in August 2012

Creative thinkers and makers are invited to submit work in all media.
