Holly Huges Premieres New Solo Piece in Chicago
Holly Hughes premieres a new full length solo piece: “The Dog And Pony Show (bring your own pony)” at the New Victory Theater in Chicago on March 18 -21 as part of the “Fresh Squeezed” series. Written and performed by Hughes, the piece is directed by Dan Hurlin, a 2010 recipient of the “USA Artists Fellowship” and a 2007 Penny W Stamps Speaker. Hughes blends autobiography, animal behavior, and bald faced lies into a poetic meditation on a midlife crisis in the key of canine, discovering that as we age, the thin membrane that divides the animal from the human dissolves entirely. After several years as a self described “professional homosexual,” preaching to the perverted and giving the religious right something to worry about, she disbands her dog and pony show, takes a real job at a prestigious university (hmmm?) and acquires a small pack of dogs, or a pack of small dogs and asks herself: what is the sound of one lesbian clapping?
