Charlie Michaels oversees the School of Art & Design's Detroit Connections Project, which fosters innovative visual art and design teaching in Detroit schools and cultural institutions. Working closely with faculty, University of Michigan students, school teachers, and children, Michaels designs and coordinates undergraduate outreach courses, educational activities, and creative projects that seek to establish collaborative and reciprocal learning environments for both University of Michigan students and community partners in Detroit. http://www.detroitconnections.org
Michaels’ studio work and community based projects focus on the relationships between people and their social and natural environments in urban spaces. His recent projects include a hand painted billboard, in collaboration with a local sign painter, which returned the stars to the sky over a dark Detroit Intersection and continued collaborations with college students and NGO’s in Ghana on public projects that address various local challenges and make art and technology accessible to children.
Michaels’ work has been exhibited throughout the United States as well as internationally in Europe and Western Africa.
