Prior to establishing her own studio, Hannah Smotrich worked as a graphic designer in New York City and Jerusalem. She also taught for eight years at the Corcoran College of Art and Design in Washington, DC.
At the School of Art & Design, Smotrich offers concept, form and content classes within the core curriculum. She also teaches Detroit Connections and advanced studio classes in graphic design. Her courses often include a strong element of community engagement, and past students have created work for organizations such as the Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti Reads program, Food Gatherers, Washtenaw Literacy, and the Michigan Bureau of Elections.
As principal and founder of side view graphic design and consulting, which she established in 1993, Smotrich works collaboratively with a variety of non-profit clients. Her projects have included exhibition catalogs, identity systems, annual reports, and retail environments. In 1996, the U.S. Postal Service selected her to design the first commemorative Hannukah stamp, issued jointly with Israel.
During her career, Smotrich has created design work for a wide array of organizations, including the Anti-Defamation League of Washington, the Appleseed Foundation, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Cultural Tourism DC, the Girl Scout Council of the Nation's Capital, the Israel Philatelic Agency, the National Building Museum, the National Gallery of Art, the United States Postal Service, the University of Maryland at College Park, the University of Michigan Museum of Art, and the White House Conference on Small Business.
Smotrich is currently designing an integrated system of materials - including large-scale sidewalk signage, guidebooks and related matter - for DC Neighborhood Heritage Trails, a network of historical walking tours in Washington, DC. Begun in 2000, the project is ongoing as the trail system expands neighborhood by neighborhood throughout the city.
