Biography

As Studio Coordinator for the Fibers area, Nancy Thorson manages studio spaces, ensures proper usage, makes sure students enrolled in fibers courses have adequate work space, and maintains the equipment and supply inventories for each studio space. The fibers area consists of a weaving studio, a sewing studio, and a print/dye/work studio attached to a wet-work studio.

Prior to joining the A&D staff in 2003, Thorson was a Clinical Research Associate in Radiology at the Clinical Trials Office of the UM Health System. Her background includes breast cancer research and equipment development. While employed in clinical research, she spent her spare time actively engaged in creating fiber and mixed media work, studying papermaking at Oxbow in Saugatuck, Michigan, bookmaking at Columbia in Chicago and surface design with Jane Dunnewold in Ohio and San Antonio. She also shared a weaving studio with another artist in downtown Ann Arbor.

In 2003, Thorson was delighted to have an opportunity to turn her enchantment with fibers into a career by leaving medical work and moving to the School of Art & Design.

In addition to her work at the A&D, Thorson is active in the Ann Arbor Fiber Arts Guild.
