Game Mod:  12.17.07

Steph Thirion presents the results of Game Mod: a 6-hour workshop in Elisava, Barcelona where graphic design students (with little to no programming experience) created unique modifications of the classic video game Breakout using Processing.

Game Mod was a six hour long workshop with the objective of showing the participants that it is not required to understand code to experiment and play with it.

Although they had no experience in coding, the task of each participant was to make a mod (modified version) of a game built in Processing.

The Superest  10.31.07

The Superest is “a continually running game of My Team, Your Team. The rules are simple: Player 1 draws a character with a power. Player 2 then draws a character whose power cancels the power of that previous character. Repeat.” Check out the one-upmanship of Kevin Cornell and Matthew Sutter’s daily drawings today!

Tom Richmond’s Digital Color Tutorial

MAD Magazine’s Tom Richmond offers up another juicy tutorial, this time on digital colouring: Part One, Part Two, Part Three. Pro users may not learn too much, but Tom’s nothing if not incredibly in-depth. He covers every detail of his colouring process no matter how seemingly inconsequential, never assuming anything of the reader. This makes it a great resource for students or those just learning the ins and outs of Photoshop. The tutorial covers everything from scanning the art right down to the last little highlight.

FIST-A-CUFFS!  03.5.07

A while back, comic book artist Sam Hiti drew some tough-looking drawings and posted one on his site. He then asked his readers to send in their contributions - drawings that they thought could take on Sam’s own drawings in a battle royale. Now, he has launched FIST-A-CUFFS, where readers can vote weekly on whose drawing reigns supreme - and the winner will be awarded a totally great cardboard championship belt!

Come out swingin’!

Daily Monster  02.19.07

On November 19th, art director and graphic designer Stefan G. Bucher started the Daily Monster project: every day for 100 days, he posted a YouTube video of the creation of a new monster drawing. We’re a little slow around these parts, so we’re catching this during the very last week of Monsters - but better late than never, right? We recommend that you start at Daily Monster #001 and work your way forward.

Timelapse painting video by a Tokyo art collective, Rinpa Eshidan. The video is titled “1 week of art works” and shows a wall being painted and re-painted over the course of 7 days. It has been viewed over 1 million times since being promoted to the front page of Youtube (following its appearance on Videosift).

Rinpa Eshidan is a group whose members include Daisuke Yamamoto, the director of this video. “Eshidan” is an archaic Japanese word meaning “painters group”. “Rinpa” includes the Japanese character for “circle”. Yamamoto writes: “rinpa is ‘circle’ style. it’s a group that values the connections between people. the members are big fans of hip-hop and art. they get together once every two months to perform at clubs.”
