DETROIT CONNECTIONS

Detroit Connections is designed to link A&D students with fourth graders at elementary schools in Detroit through semester-long visual and performance art projects.  The course combines work with the children with academic study of pertinent issues such as the state of urban schools and the cognitive benefits of creative projects for young children.

Working intensively in Detroit each week, students participate in field visits and projects that give them first-hand experiences of the city’s history and contemporary culture. In planning for and reflecting on class projects, students develop close ties with the children and produce vibrant creative work that transforms the physical nature of the schools, while the collaborative work experiences across generations and cultures expands the world views of all involved.
