Disruptive Stillness

How and why might stillness become a disruption? 

This international juried exhibition seeks work in all media embodying the concept of stillness. 

While many artists align themselves with the frenetic culture that permeates our networked society, a growing number of artists challenge their audience to avoid the trap of speed. They believe in the power of contemplation, of making art that requires its audience to devote significant amounts of time in order to mindfully watch and listen – activities that disrupt contemporary life. What happens when we pause? How and why does this simple, universal act make those who do not engage in this activity uncomfortable?

In providing an interdisciplinary forum for the exploration of these ideas, we will begin to investigate art’s place in the burgeoning “Slow” movement.

Closing reception: January 28th from 6 - 9 pm

Closing Reception Performances:

• MFA candidate Reed Esslinger will be performing throughout the evening along with her large-scale fiber, metal and fabric installation.
• At 7:30pm, MFA candidates Collin McRae and John Kannenberg will perform a sonic duet, with Collin on violin and laptop and John ringing bells, drawing on a snare drum, and fiddling with some electronics.
• At 8pm, sound art theorist and composer Seth Cluett, visiting from Miami University in Ohio, will perform a sound piece related to his work in the show.
